About the “Suggested Questions” Series:
From the very beginning of philosophy—or at least from the first emergence of the word “philosophy”—in other words, considering the entire body of works produced from Ancient Greece, which is generally recognized as the “birthplace of philosophy”, to the present day, it is natural to feel lost in an immense ocean. Exploring the works of thinkers encountered either randomly or through deliberate engagement can be likened to discovering an island in this vast ocean.
In some cases, such an island may seem so vast that it feels as if the entire world consists solely of it—until the boundless ocean once again reveals itself at the island’s shore. In other cases, no such island is found at all, leaving one adrift, as though being carried from one place to another in a boat—drifting from one thinker to another, from one work to the next.
Unless one is working strictly within a particular doctrine, seeking complete refuge in the ancient harbor, or reducing philosophy merely to the study of its history, this sense of being lost, adrift, or experiencing disappointment in the face of either the island’s smallness or the ocean’s vastness can only be addressed by pairing the study of philosophical texts with a structured reading of the history of philosophy. Just as a structured reading of philosophy’s history is crucial, so too is the act of formulating a question—that is, opening a window, making a proposal. Without this key question, one could say that the door to the history of philosophy remains locked from the inside.
This series, titled “Suggested Questions”, seeks to propose a thought-provoking question in each individual study.
